Baylor University’s Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences is pleased to announce the appointment of Daniel Kim, PhD, as Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD).

“We are very excited about Dr. Kim joining our team and are confident that his expertise in motor speech disorders, dysarthria, and neurodegenerative diseases to positively impact our program,” said Michaela Ritter, EdD, CCC-SLP, holder of the Martin Family Endowed Chair in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. “We look forward to the significant contributions he will make to both our academic community and student success.”

Kim recently earned a PhD in Hearing and Speech Sciences from Vanderbilt University. He received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Boston College and a Master of Education from the Mind, Brain, and Education program at Harvard University. While working as a graduate research assistant at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Kim served in the Speech Kinematics and Acoustics Lab (directed by Dr. Antje Mefferd). He has earned numerous honors, including the prestigious New Century Scholars Doctoral Scholarship from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHFoundation).

Kim is a published author, most notably in Brain Sciences and in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. He has also provided oral and poster presentations at both national and international conferences.

Kim’s research interests focus on motor speech disorders and speech production as he investigates the effects of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson's disease. Specifically, he employs kinematic and perceptual experimental methods to better understand the articulatory bases of deviant speech patterns in dysarthria. His current line of research focuses on the heterogeneous manifestation of dysarthria in individuals with the same underlying disease.

“My goal is to develop more effective and personalized approaches to assess and treat dysarthria,” Kim explained. “Ultimately, I aim to enhance communication and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by these challenging conditions.”

Despite the time zone difference, Kim is a “dedicated supporter” of Liverpool Football Club and enjoys watching their matches live on weekends. Ultimately, he is excited to become part of the Baylor University and CSD family.

“I am deeply honored and thrilled to join the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Baylor University,” Kim said. “I look forward to working alongside the talented faculty and motivated students at Baylor, to advance knowledge in our field, and improve the lives of individuals with communication disorders.”
